Past Perfect Tense

FORMULA
Positive statement: Subject + had + verb 3.
Example: I had spoken English.
Negative statement: Subject + had not/ hadn’t + verb 3.
Example: I hadn’t spoken English.
Interrogative: Had + subject + verb 3?
Example: Had I spoken English?
Function:
a. Past Perfect Tense is used to express activity or event that had finished when another activity or event happened in the past.
Example: I. I explained that I had forgotten my keys.
II. When I reached the station, the train had left.
III. When Miko arrived at home, all of his family had slept.
b. Past Perfect Tense is used to express frequency of activity or event that happened in the past.
Example: I. I had drunk coffee twice.
II. They had applied many times.
III. Miki had lost her iphone three times in the canteen.
c. Past Perfect Tense is used to express supposition that is impossible to happen anymore, because it happened in the past.
Example: I. If Mika had called Miko a bit earlier, he wouldn’t have missed his flight.
II. If they had cancelled the plan, she wouldn’t have suffered from embarrassment.
