Mengapa Saya Mencintai Apple dan iPhone

Pertama2, disclaimer dulu. Gw bukan fanboi Apple by default. Sebelum dan sejak Apple memulai revolusi smartphone dengan meluncurkan iPhone, gw uda coba semua merek flagship dari pocketpc (gw punya satu toshiba tablet, dua HP tablet dan satu toshiba hybrid laptop dan tablet), blackberry, lumia (windows), android sampe apple.

Ini adalah hasil pengalaman gw menggunakan berbagai gadget2 di atas sampe akhirnya gw jatuhkan pilihan kepada apple.

So, without further ado, mengapa saya mencintai produk apple dan iphone:

1. Keamanan. Pekerjaan gw mengutamakan keamanan sehingga dalam milih gadget gw selalu milih yang paling aman dan karena itu gadget ideal gw sejak jaman Bold adalah blackberry. Plus gw lebih cocok pake keyboard qwerty fisik daripada digital. Tapi krn blackberry uda mati (hp bb yang ada skrg produk RRC yang membeli lisensi merek dari BB / RIM), apa boleh buat terpaksa harus pilih produk lain. BB terakhir yang gw pake sebelum hijrah adalah Priv.

Dalam soal keamanan, jelas iphone nomor 1 saat ini. Sistem android terlalu terbuka dan gak menolong bahwa bisnis utama google atau alphabet sebagai parent company dari android adalah iklan sehingga mereka harus mengambil data pengguna dengan tujuan diolah agar dapat menayangkan iklan yang cocok untuk user tertentu. Itu sebabnya google mengratiskan os android untuk dipakai siapa saja karena buat google, android adalah freemium, di mana di awal terkesan gratis tapi untuk menggunakannya user harus bayar dengan data pribadi mereka.

Selalu itu, karena open source maka android mudah disusupi malware dan/atau program2 jahat lain.

Ketidakamanan sistem operasi google juga gampang dimanfaatkan oleh pemerintah negara luar untuk mencuri data rakyat negara lain seperti yang dilakukan oleh huawei dan zte. Gw cukup yakin hp android merek RRC yang lain juga ditanam chip sebagai backdoor mencuri data pemiliknya.

Nah....untuk Apple, privasi adalah nomor 1. Mereka bahkan pernah menolak permintaan FBI untuk menciptakan backdoor agar FBI bisa buka iphone penjahat. Bisnis utama apple juga bukan iklan sehingga mereka enggak anggap data user sebagai komoditas atau barang dagangan.

2. It’s just works. Ingatan gw kepada buruknya pocketpc windows dan internet di nokia jadul membuat gw semakin menghargai iphone generasi pertama. Iphone adalah smartphone pertama yang mampu menampilkan full web tanpa ngelag. Iphone juga hp yang tidak membutuhkan manual karena secara intuitif bisa digunakan.

Gw gak bercanda. Pocketpc toshiba lebih sering gw gunakan sebagai universal remote control karena penggunaannya terbatas. Begitu juga dengan dua HP gw. Paling gw pake buat main catur karena enggak banyak yang bisa digunakan dengan pocket pc tersebut. Untuk pake sebagai telepon juga enggak enak karena terlalu besar dan lebar.

Nokia gw selalu gunakan yang model top of the line. Bahasa jaman sekarang flagship seperti communicator, tapi communicator terlalu besar dan enggak nyaman dipegang kemana-mana. Nokia ideal gw adalah N7650, N8800, N70 dan N95. HP2 ini enak buat telepon dan sms sambil sesekali main snake tapi teknologi di dalamnya masih sangat terbatas untuk digunakan sebagai web browser.

Lalu gw sempet beberapa kali pake android. Gw pernah beli samsung S4 jaman baru keluar tapi enggak lama langsung gw kasih kakak gw karena enggak suka. Baru-baru ini coba gunakan samsung j6+ tapi ini hp lemotnya enggak tahan. Produk sampah.

Gw juga pernah sekali beli Nokia Lumia 800 sekedar untuk mencoba windows phone. Yah, ada alasan sekarang windows phone uda mati kan? os 8 windows dengan kotak2 cantik di mata tapi enggak efektif dan efisien sebagai os smartphone.

3. Originalitas. Tidak ada satupun pembenci Apple dan iPhone yang bisa membantah bahwa iOS merupakan produk yang revolutionary sehingga merek-merek yang sudah established seperti nokia dan blackberry ditinggal pembeli sampe bangkrut dan google melalui eksekutif mereka yang ada di apple, eric snitch mencuri iOS untuk membuat os android.....

4. Desain. Apa ada yang meragukan desain produk apple dan iOS sangat luar biasa indah sampe kompetitor mereka shamelessly sering mencuri industrial design iphone cuma demi numpang publisitas gratis dan mengincar orang2 yang suka desain iphone tapi enggak punya cukup uang untuk membeli iphone?

5. Ekosistem apple. Kebetulan selain iphone, gw punya macbook pro, macbook air, imac, mac mini, homepod, apple watch, airpod, dan ipad. Gw juga pengguna apple music dan sesekali sportify. Dan wow, cara produk2 apple bekerja dengan iphone sebagai hub secara seamless sangat luar biasa dan sukar diuraikan dengan kata-kata. Lu harus coba sendiri untuk memahami apa yang gw maksud.

6. Steve Jobs. Sekarang kita pesan makanan, cari taksi, beli musik, beli apps, beli film, pesen tiket, bayar barang dll tinggal klik di smartphone. Tapi smartphone tidak akan tercipta tanpa komputer dengan koneksi internet dan web browser yang cukup kuat dan intuitif untuk digunakan. Semua ini enggak akan ada tanpa almarhum Steve Jobs. Yes, ini gak berlebihan. Bahkan kaskus enggak pernah ada tanpa Steve Jobs.

Berlebihan? Sama sekali enggak. Semua tahu Apple dimulai oleh Steve Jobs dan Steve Wozniak, di mana Jobs bertugas memasarkan komputer Apple 1 ciptaan Wozniak. Banyak orang bilang tanpa Woz maka Jobs enggak akan jadi ikonik seperti sekarang. Tapi gw cenderung berpendapat bahwa tanpa Woz, Jobs tetaplah Jobs, dia akan menemukan “Woz” yang lain dan menciptakan hal revolusioner bersama “Woz baru” ini.

Ini bisa dilihat dari Steve Wozniak sendiri. Dia sering boastful mengatakan bahwa Apple 1 adalah yang komputer PC pertama. Tapi yang gak banyak orang tahu adalah Apple 1 sendiri meniru Alstair 8800, dan awalnya Woz membagi2kan desain Apple 1 di perkumpulan pecinta komputer secara gratis. Komputer ciptaan Woz berikutnya adalah Apple II dan ini sempat jadi sumber pendapatan Apple selama puluhan tahun tapi enggak ada perkembangan signifikan pada Apple II sehingga ketika komputer ini obsolete, Apple kehilangan arah. Sampai sekarang Woz juga tidak lagi menciptakan produk revolusioner dan perusahaan2 dia sejak keluar dari Apple mati.

Sebaliknya, mata dan intuisi tajam Steve Jobs berkali2 menemukan produk-produk komputer yang membawa umat manusia kepada kemajuan teknologi saat ini. Produk pertama yang dilihat Steve Jobs tentu saja desain Steve Wozniak yang kelak jadi Apple 1 dan disempurnakan jadi Apple II. Dia segera menghentikan Woz dari bagi2kan desain itu secara gratis. Kemajuan teknologi kedua adalah graphical user interface dan mouse ketika dia pertama kali melihatnya di Xerox PARC padahal saat itu Xerox menganggap GUI dan mouse sebagai sampah.

Dua komputer pertama Apple yang gunakan GUI dan Mouse yaitu Lisa dan Macintosh memang gagal di pasaran tapi seperti belakangan diakui ex CEO Apple, John Sculley, ide Jobs yang diimplementasikan ke dalam Lisa dan Macintosh terlalu cepat tiga tahun karena tiga tahun setelah Macintosh dianggap gagal, ternyata pasar mulai menyerap dan menyukai produk ini.

Nah, Windows sendiri adalah GUI Apple yang dicuri Bill Gates dari Apple. Dengan kata lain tanpa Steve Jobs enggak akan ada Windows karena awalnya jualan Microsoft adalah MS-DOS yang berbasis kode untuk aktivasi program. Yang pernah gunakan atau belajar MS-DOS pasti tahu betapa seperti nerakanya gunakan MS-DOS.

Pasca kegagalan Lisa dan Macintosh memang Steve sempat keluar dari Apple karena terjadi perpecahan dengan Board of Directors Apple dan John Sculley. Tapi visi Steve Jobs yang enggak terkekang itu setelah bebas menjadi meluap2. Impian GUI ideal Steve Jobs menghasilkan OS NEXTSTEP. OS ini adalah cikal bakal MacOS, iOS, IpadOS, WatchOS dan lain sebagainya. Tahu WWW yang ada di depan semua website? Ini diciptakan menggunakan komputer NEXT dengan OS NEXTSTEP. Dgn kata lain, tanpa Steve Jobs dan NEXT, kita di sini enggak akan bisa internetan, apalagi ngaskus.

Lalu Steve juga membeli divisi komputer dari LucasFilm dan menciptakan Pixar Animation yang melahirkan banyak animasi komputer bermutu seperti Toy Story.

Pasca kembalinya Steve Jobs ke Apple, berturut2 dia menciptakan all-in-one PC yang sangat indah melalui line iMac; MP3 player yang akhirnya diterima pasar yaitu ipod, dan tablet/smartphone yang ideal buat pasar: iphone dan ipad. Sejak tahun 90an, Steve juga sudah memikirkan keberadaan toko digital, yaitu tempat di mana orang bisa membeli program/app/film/music secara digital. Ide ini melahirkan app store, itunes dan itunes store dan lain-lain.

Lagi-lagi, karena Android adalah curian dari iOS maka tanpa iOS kita masih terjebak marketing Nokia dan Blackberry yang mengeluarkan teknologi pelan-pelan ke dalam handphone mereka supaya bisa jual lebih banyak handphone. Android sendiri sebelum iOS diluncurkan lebih mirip symbian-nya Nokia.

Sekalian numpang taro gambar produk Apple punya gw. Sebagian masih gw pake dan sebagian gw beli sebagai koleksi legacy. Masih bbrp yang belom kefoto seperti Mac Mini 2018, iMac 2017, dan XS Max....

PPLE’S 16-INCH MACBOOK PRO IS HERE, AND IT HAS A GOOD KEYBOARD

AppleApple has launched a new 16-inch MacBook Pro today, available for pre-order now and in stores later this week. The starting price of $2,399 is the same price as the previous 15-inch MacBook Pro, which this one replaces. It has new processors, better speakers, and (obviously) a larger screen. But I know the most important question you have is whether the keyboard is any good.

Reader, it is good.

I shouldn’t be that definitive in this hands-on with the laptop since I’ve only been typing on it for half a day, but I don’t expect my opinion to change with more time. Apple has dropped the butterfly mechanism it has used on MacBooks for the past few years and gone back to good old reliable scissor switches. Apple has enough faith in this new (old) design that it won’t be including this MacBook Pro in its extended keyboard repair program.

I will get to the rest of the laptop but truthfully most of it is going to be what you’d expect (though there are a couple of happy surprises). But let’s spend some time just basking in the subtle, resonant sounds of this keyboard.

THE KEYBOARD

There’sThere’s about a millimeter of key travel and the whole thing is blissfully quiet (though it’s not as silent as the keys on a Pixelbook Go). It has a more muted thumpy sound and feel compared to the 2015 MacBook Pro with the older style keyboard — which now feels overly springy to me. I prefer this keyboard. It may have a little less travel than those 2015 models but the backlight doesn’t bleed out the sides of the keys.

The whole thing feels just a little stabler than the 2015 model, too. Apple says that it has done extra work to stabilize the keycaps, made them slightly smaller so there’s more space between the keys, and that if a key breaks you can just replace that one key without taking apart the whole laptop.

There is a real, honest-to-god Esc key in the upper left. The Touch Bar is still here, just shorter, and it is still flanked by a fingerprint sensor on the right. The other major improvement is a return to the “inverted T” formation for the arrow keys, which makes finding the right one by feel a thousand times easier than before.

Unfortunately, Apple has nothing to say about the rest of the MacBook lineup. Hopefully each of them in turn will be updated to this design, because it is clearly superior. Apple says that it took inspiration from the Bluetooth Magic Keyboard it sells alongside the iMac Pro, and so this keyboard also is called “Magic.” Okay. It is just gratifying to see Apple finally do what everybody has been asking for.

With the 15-inch MacBook Pro specifically, there has been another request that Apple is trying to meet: improved thermal performance. Thermal throttling of the processor was a significant issue last year, and even after Apple issued a software fix, the conventional wisdom is that the thin body Apple had designed kept the processors inside it from running at full tilt for as long as they could on other laptops.

I can’t tell you that Apple has resolved that issue, but it certainly seems as though it has tried very hard to do so. This 16-inch MacBook Pro is 0.7mm thicker than the last version, but more importantly the entire thermal system inside has been redesigned. Apple says the heat sink on the main CPU has 35 percent more surface area and the fans inside can push through 28 percent more air. The logic board and even the speakers have apparently been optimized to ensure heat escapes this chassis as efficiently as possible.

We’ve only done a couple of quick video export tests today and our results are so preliminary I hesitate to share them — but I will say that we saw bigger differences compared to last year’s model in our second test, which could point to improved thermals.

Apple is offering two base configs with Intel 9th Gen processors. There’s a 6-core Core i7 and an 8-core Core i9, but the processors aren’t actually the most important specs. That would be the RAM and storage. The base for each is fairly normal: 16GB of 2666MHz DDR4 RAM and 512GB or 1TB SSD (depending on the model). Where it gets interesting is the maximum available for RAM and storage is much higher than before.

You can spec this machine up to 64GB of RAM and 8TB (not a typo) of storage on the SSD. That’s just a massive amount of storage, and it will cost $6,099 to get a fully loaded 16-inch MacBook Pro.

The other important spec is the battery: it’s 100Wh. Apple says that it noted the FAA’s regulation that “Lithium ion (rechargeable) batteries are limited to a rating of 100 watt hours (Wh) per battery” and just made its battery the maximum available size. Since it has to power a larger screen and processors that can now run hotter, not all of the increased size goes to longevity. Apple rates it for 11 hours of “wireless web,” which is just one hour longer than last year’s model.

Apple’sApple’s “6-speaker sound system” is easily the most pleasant surprise on this machine. Apple says that on each side there are two “force cancelling woofers.” In essence, they’re designed to cancel out the other’s vibrations, which allows for more bass with less distortion (and less keyboard rattling).

Whether the force cancelling is legit or not, the speakers themselves are incredibly good in my early tests. Stereo separation is remarkable, mids and clear, and the bass is better than I’ve heard on any laptop before.

I’m more skeptical of Apple’s claims around the three-microphone array — which is supposed to be on par with USB-powered podcasting mics. In a couple of recordings it was better than your bog standard laptop mic, but we’ll want to do more real testing.

The camera above the screen, by the way, is still a ho-hum 720p sensor that produces ho-hum image quality. I know most people just use it for video conferencing, but even the compression you get in Zoom or Skype probably won’t hide the mundanity of this webcam.

THE SCREEN

TheThe fact that I’m talking about the screen last on a product whose literal title is a reference to the screen size, “16-inch,” is not lost on me. That’s because unless something catastrophic comes up in my testing for the review, you can take this screen for granted as another typically great Apple laptop screen.

It has a resolution of 3072 x 1920 and supports the P3 wide color gamut with support for Apple’s True Tone color shifting. It can get up to 500 nits of brightness but it is not, unfortunately, HDR. That last bit is a bummer, but not too much of one.

Apple fit the 16-inch screen into a 15-inch body by slimming the bezels down on the left and right a lot and the top and bottom a little. And when I say “15-inch body” I should be clearer: I mean the 2015 15-inch MacBook Pro. This 16-inch model is very nearly identical to that older model’s size, which makes it very slightly bigger than last year’s model.

WRAPPING UP

Really,Really, that 2015 15-inch MacBook Pro is the benchmark here. That may have been the last MacBook that was nearly universally beloved: it was powerful, had a great keyboard, screen, and plenty of ports. That’s the level Apple needs this 16-inch model to get back to.

Sadly, if you’re judging on ports, it won’t. There are still just four Thunderbolt 3 ports and a headphone jack (thank god). I know it’s too much to ask for Apple to include HDMI or even USB-A, but the lack of an SD card slot when there’s this much space to work with seems downright spiteful.

That probably won’t matter, though. Because Apple has almost surely delivered the thing people have been asking for: a MacBook Pro with a good keyboard and (hopefully) sufficient thermals.

At the 2019 Jamf Nation User Conference (JNUC), IBM announced the results of the research it conducted with its employees using Apple Macs compared to PCs. The research showed that employees who used an Apple Mac were more likely to stay with IBM and they also exceeded performance expectations compared to PC users. Ever since IBM announced the Mac@IBM program in 2015, the company now has over 290,000 Apple devices being used within its organization.


Jamf is the standard for Apple in the enterprise and it extends the Apple experience to businesses, schools and government organizations through its software and the 100,000 members of Jamf Nation — which is the largest community of Apple IT admins in the world. There are more than 35,000 global customers that entrust Jamf with over 15 million devices.

When IBM announced the Mac@IBM program on stage at JNUC in 2015, the company was deploying 1,900 Macs per week — which were all supported by 24 help desk staff members. This equated to about one staff member supporting 5,400 Mac users compared to one support staff member supporting 242 PC users. Plus IBM also found only 5% of Mac users called the help desk for assistance compared to 40% of PC users.

IBM chief information officer Fletcher Previn came back on the JNUC stage in 2016 to give an update on the Mac deployments. At that time, over 90,000 Macs were deployed and Previn pointed out that IBM saved between $273-$543 per Mac compared to a PC over a four-year span. And last year, Previn said IBM was managing over 277,000 Apple devices, all supported by 78 staff members. Plus Previn also revealed that IBM open-sourced its provisioning process to assist the Mac community in delivering the same new-hire experience as it does with its Mac@IBM program.

For 2019, Previn unveiled the first-of-its-kind research that shows how Mac enables IBM employees to be more productive and improve on employee satisfaction and retention. In terms of improved employee performance, there are 22% more macOS users who exceeded expectations in performance reviews compared to Windows users. And high-value sales deals tend to be 16% larger for macOS users compared to Windows users.


IBM’s research also showed that employees using Mac have a higher net promoter score than Windows users at 47.5 compared to 15 respectively. And they are also 17% less likely to leave IBM compared to those who are using Windows. Mac users have been happier with the third-party software availability within IBM. And only 5% of macOS users ask for additional software compared to 11% of Windows users.

Macs also require much less support. There are 7 engineers who support 200,000 macOS devices versus 20 engineers required to support 200,000 Windows devices. This is a 186% increase in support engineering needed for Windows devices. Migration is also easier for IBM workers using Mac as nearly 98% of macOS users report that the migration was simple compared to 86% migrating from Windows 7 to Windows 10. And Windows users are also 5 times more likely to need on-site help desk support compared to macOS users.

“The state of IT is a daily reflection of what IBM thinks and feels about its employees,” said Previn. “I’ve said it before – when did it become OK to live like the Jetsons at home but the Flintstones at work? We aim to create a productive environment for IBMers and continuously improve their work experience, and that’s why we introduced our employee-choice program to IBM employees in 2015.”

Apple itu cuma sampah orang kaya. Apple gak ada gunanya di pabrik, krn mayoritas pabrik manufaktur pasti pake Windows. contohnya di pabrik perakitan Apple sendiri masih pake Windows. bahkan Kapal Induk Amerika pun masih pake Windows XP sbg OS untuk mengatur lalu lintas pesawat tempur dan sbg OS manajemen di kapal induk. Windows XP yg seperti jaman batu lebih berjasa mengamankan kapal induk yg mahal ketimbang Mac cuma jadi alat untuk presentasi dan ngetik doang.

Stadia launch dev: Game makers are worried “Google is just going to cancel it”
Kine maker adds, “I don't even think they want to have a super-strong launch.”

Google has a long and well-documented history of launching new services only to shut them down a few months or years later. And with the launch of Stadia imminent, one launch game developer has acknowledged the prevalence of concerns about that history among her fellow developers while also downplaying their seriousness in light of Stadia's potential.
"The biggest complaint most developers have with Stadia is the fear that Google is just going to cancel it," Gwen Frey, developer of Stadia launch puzzle game Kine, told GamesIndustry.biz in recently published comments. "Nobody ever says, 'Oh, it's not going to work,' or 'Streaming isn't the future.' Everyone accepts that streaming is pretty much inevitable. The biggest concern with Stadia is that it might not exist."

While concerns about Stadia working correctly aren't quite as nonexistent as Frey said, early tests show the service works well enough in ideal circumstances. As for the service's continued existence, Frey thinks such concerns among other developers are "kind of silly."

"Working in tech, you have to be willing to make bold moves and try things that could fail," Frey continued. "And yeah, Google's canceled a lot of projects. But I also have a Pixel in my pocket, I'm using Google Maps to get around. I only got here because my Google Calendar told me to get here by giving me a prompt in Gmail. It's not like Google cancels every fucking thing they make."

Google itself has made similar arguments in the past. Stadia Director of Product Andrey Doronichev said in July that Google's commitment to Stadia is comparable to services like Gmail, Docs, Music, Movies, and Photos. "Nothing in life is certain, but we're committed to making Stadia a success... Of course, it’s OK to doubt my words. There's nothing I can say now to make you believe if you don't. But what we can do is to launch the service and continue investing in it for years to come."
Worries over Stadia's continued existence aren't exactly academic for potential consumers, though, since Google is primarily asking players to pay full price for Stadia games that only exist on Google's own servers. Anyone who similarly bought games for streaming service OnLive years ago knows what can come of that kind of investment if and when the service goes under.

Slow start, grand potential
Elsewhere in the interview, Frey said she sees Google's Stadia launch strategy as a limited one that "is pushing Stadia in a direction to compete with consoles." That means ports of console-style games that don't take full advantage of the power of Stadia's cloud data centers, as Google says future Stadia exclusives may do.

It also means a focus on "territories where there are a lot of consoles and where the Internet is very good, so in the short-term I think it won't reach its potential," Frey said. "I don't even think they want to have a super-strong launch. I get the sense that they want to scale slowly and see where this goes."

In the longer term, though, Frey said she has some undisclosed ideas about how to use Stadia's cloud power for unique experiences in the future. And she said she's excited about the impact cloud gaming could have once high-speed mobile Internet access really goes worldwide.

"I'm not sure what implications this has in a place like Africa, where everything's mobile," she said. "When 6G drops, is this going to suddenly be a big deal? What does this mean for places where everyone goes to Internet cafes, like in Brazil? Who knows."

Jakarta - Penelitian dari IBM menunjukkan bahwa karyawan yang memakai komputer Apple Mac cenderung performanya melebihi ekspektasi dibandingkan mereka yang memakai PC Windows. User Mac juga lebih berhasil dalam menggolkan deal penjualan berharga tinggi.

Hal itu sebenarnya cukup ironis mengingat IBM sangat berperan dalam mengatrol popularitas PC pada tahun 1980-an. Tapi belakangan mereka semakin banyak membekali pegawainya dengan komputer Mac.

Dikutip detikINET dari Cult of Mac, Chief Information Officer IBM, Fletcher Previn, menyatakan bahwa user Mac 22% lebih banyak menghasilkan performa tinggi di perusahaannya, dibandingkan pengguna Windows.

Kemudian, deal penjualan bernilai besar 16% lebih tinggi dilakukan user Mac. Selain itu, pemakai Mac 17% lebih loyal alias tidak berniat meninggalkan perusahaan dan lebih bahagia dalam memakai software pihak ketiga.

Tak cuma itu, karyawan yang mengandalkan Mac lebih sedikit membutuhkan support teknis, yaitu 7 engineer untuk 200.000 perangkat Mac dibandingkan 20 engineer untuk perangkat Windows.

IBM memang sangat banyak menggunakan Mac, totalnya 290.000 unit. Jauh lebih tinggi dibandingkan data tahun 2016 yang 90.000 unit.

Karyawan IBM bebas memilih memakai Mac atau Windows sejak tahun 2015. "Kami ingin menciptakan lingkungan produktif bagi pegawai IBM dan meningkatkan pengalaman mereka," cetus Previn.

Google Cloud in Major Global Outage: Numerous Services Fail

“Multiple products are affected globally”

Google Cloud Platform (GCP) services down. Issue global in scale. Numerous services affected, including Kubernetes and IoT services like Nest.

Google Cloud Platform (GCP) says it is experiencing a “major issue” with services including Cloud Dataflow, AppEngine, Compute Engine, Cloud Storage, Dataflow, Dataproc, Pub/Sub, BigQuery, Networking all failing today as of 9.14 am BST.

“Multiple products are affected globally” Google Cloud said today.

Engineers are working to mitigate the incident, the company said in a status update. Users of connected home services Nest were among those facing issues.

UPDATED 12.44 BST: “We are investigating an issue with an infrastructure component impacting multiple products. We believe we have identified the cause and are currently rolling out mitigation” GCP said.

UPDATED 22:00 BST. GCP engineers resolved the issue in approximately 2 hours, 15 minutes. The company says says the issue hit “some Google Cloud APIs across us-east1, us-east4 and southamerica-east1, with some APIs impacted globally. This includes the APIs for Compute Engine, Cloud Storage, BigQuery, Dataflow, Dataproc, and Pub/Sub. App Engine applications in those regions [were] also impacted.”

The issue comes 21 days after users faced 100 percent packet loss to and from ~20 percent of instances in GCP’s us-west1-b region for two-and-a-half hours.

That outage was blamed on failure in the underlying leader election system” (its “Chubby lock system”) which “resulted in components in the control plane losing and gaining leadership in short succession.”

The issue follows a string of public cloud outages; a reminder that even the best resourced IaaS companies are not immune to development and infrastructure borkage.

AWS, Azure and GCP have all suffered high profile incidents in the past six months, with AWS services interrupted by a DDoS attack for eight hours on October 22, the same day that GCP suffered its US west coast issue.

Azure has also struggled with a string of well documented outages, with an overloaded Redis cache triggering a 17-hour multi-factor authentification outage in November and Office 365 failing in January; something Microsoft blamed on a “subset of mailbox database infrastructure [that] became degraded, causing impact”.

The world is waiting for Google Stadia to flop

A make-or-break moment for cloud gaming

On November 19th, Google will officially become a game company, one with its very own console, controller, and distribution platform for the latest triple-A games. If all goes well, it may stand shoulder to shoulder with Sony PlayStation, Microsoft Xbox, Nintendo and Steam, or even surpass them someday.

That’s because Google is the biggest, best-positioned company to ever throw its weight behind cloud gaming — a technology that lets you play a game without discs or downloads, by streaming them from remote servers, just like you’d stream a YouTube video to your TV, laptop, or even the phone in your pocket.

But it also means this may be a make-or-break moment for cloud gaming if its champion fails to impress — and it’s not looking good.

All the games coming to Google Stadia at launch and through 2020
On the eve of launch, it feels like the deck is stacked against Stadia. Skeptics wonder how it could possibly work given today’s internet speeds, the possibility of blowing through your data cap, and the requirement that gamers pay full price for titles that may only live in the cloud. Critics speculate that cloud gaming might eliminate the used game market and modding scene, and impact the ability to preserve games for future generations. Potential adopters worry what might happen if it isn’t quite as much of a success as Google hopes, since Google is infamous for walking away from products when they don’t have the desired impact. Nobody wants to buy games that might disappear, after all.

One of Google’s own Stadia partners recently admitted that game developers are afraid of that possibility too: “The biggest complaint most developers have with Stadia is the fear that Google is just going to cancel it,” Kine developer Gwen Frey told GamesIndustry.biz. (Note: The thrust of her argument was that devs shouldn’t be afraid, because it’s a risk worth taking. “It’s not like Google cancels every fucking thing they make,” she pointed out.)

But perhaps the biggest blow against Stadia is how Google keeps proving the platform isn’t fully ready. Google has spent the past few months retroactively revealing that early adopters who paid $130 are buying into a glorified beta test — with few games, many missing features, and a wireless controller that requires a wire on phones and PCs.

Here’s a brief timeline of events:

March 19th: Google announces Stadia, a cloud gaming service that can instantly stream games to TV, desktop, laptop, tablet or phone; seamlessly swap between them, thanks to a wireless controller that connects directly to Google’s cloud; instantly stream to YouTube in 4K or summon the Google Assistant for game tips with the press of a dedicated button; let viewers instantly play alongside YouTube creators and relive the exact gaming moments they share just by clicking a link (Crowd Play, State Share); offer cross-platform multiplayer with PC and console; allow gamers to share their entire screen with teammates (Stream Connect); and deliver games with advanced graphics and physics that are impossible to offer on consoles today by combining the power of multiple cloud servers.
June 6th: Google opens pre-orders for the $130 Founder’s Edition, including a Buddy Pass that will let you bring a friend along for the ride, but also reveals Stadia won’t be a Netflix-style all-you-can-eat subscription but mostly require you to pay full price for games; Google reveals a who’s who of participating game publishers but no killer apps, pointing out that the existing Destiny 2 will be its flagship title for the time being.
June 15th: Bungie reveals Destiny 2 on Stadia will be a “closed ecosystem” with no cross-platform multiplayer.
July 18th: Stadia’s product director reveals that the wireless controller won’t support wireless headphones for TV play on day one.
October 16th: Google is caught adding a disclaimer that you’ll initially have to plug a USB-C cable into the wireless controller to use it with PCs and phones.
October 22nd: It turns out your Stadia pre-order won’t necessarily arrive on launch day, because Google isn’t shipping them all at once.
October 24th: Google studio lead Jade Raymond admits it “may be several years” before a big game takes full advantage of the cloud.
November 11th: Google reveals that only 12 games will be available at launch.
November 13th: In a Reddit AMA, Google says that at launch, Stadia won’t give you that Buddy Pass for a friend for the first couple weeks; won’t offer Google Assistant features except asking Google to launch a game; won’t stream 4K or HDR to Chrome PCs; won’t offer any games with key Stream Connect, State Share or Crowd Play multiplayer and YouTube features; won’t work on Chromecast Ultras that weren’t purchased as part of the Founder’s Edition package until they get a firmware update, and more.
It’s also worth noting that Koei Tecmo president and Stadia partner Hisashi Koinuma told The Wall Street Journal he wasn’t wholly satisfied with Stadia after months of testing, saying that he anticipates some “unexpected technological troubles” at launch. The honesty is refreshing, but it’s not a great sign when your own partners throw you under the bus.

None of this is the end of the world, particularly since Stadia will have a free tier in 2020 that doesn’t require you to buy any hardware or subscription at all — you’ll only need to pay for the games. Perhaps Google will simply reset expectations by calling that the true “launch,” and by then everything else will be ironed out.

CLOUD GAMING WORKS, IT’S JUST NOT EVENLY DISTRIBUTED
And some of the criticisms of cloud gaming are unfair. The idea that you could play a game entirely over the internet was proven nearly a decade ago by OnLive and Gaikai (which later became PlayStation Now). Both were playable with a good internet connection back in 2010.

They just didn’t make much sense because the servers weren’t distributed broadly enough, the average US internet connection wasn’t fast enough, and the economics of maintaining a single PS3 console or server in the datacenter for each and every player meant they cost too much money to attract gamers and developers effectively. But Google has existing internet infrastructure that spans the globe, average home internet speeds have shot up, and Google has never shied away from throwing massive amounts of servers at money-losing projects like nigh-infinite Gmail or Google Photos storage if that means it can dominate an industry afterwards.

That’s probably why potential competitors like Sony, Microsoft, EA, Nvidia and Valve are being so cautious right now: rolling out early technical previews of their cloud gaming services, or tweaking their prices to be more reasonable, or edging in sideways with cloud-adjacent features instead of revealing their hand too early, or striking mysterious deals to hedge their bets, or rolling out invite-only betas to a few more devices first. They can’t outspend Google, and they don’t want to bet too much if Stadia winds up poisoning the cloud gaming well.

Like the rest of us, they’re waiting to see if Stadia will flop. I hope it won’t. I wouldn’t be surprised if it does.

The Australian consumer watchdog accused Google on Tuesday of lying to customers about personal location data the company collects through its Android mobile operating system. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is taking the tech giant to court, seeking penalties and the establishment of a compliance program.

Court documents allege that from January 2017 until late 2018, Google led consumers to incorrectly believe that turning off the setting "Location History" would prevent data from being collected.

The commission said that another setting, "Web & App Activity," also had to be disabled for data collection to be turned off. Officials said that Google was purposefully "staying silent" about the secondary setting.

Regulators added that Google failed to tell users what the company used the collected location data for.

"We consider that because of Google's failure to disclose this use of data, consumers were and still are deprived of the opportunity to make an informed choice about whether to share their personal location data with Google," ACCC Chair Rod Sims said in a statement.

The suit alleges that Google used personal data to infer demographic information and supply advertising services to third parties, among other purposes.

A Google spokesperson said that the company is reviewing the allegations and will cooperate with the ACCC, but it intends to defend itself.

Earlier this year, the ACCC released a report that recommended that legislation pass sweeping consumer protection reforms to address the dominance of digital platforms such as Google and Facebook.

Targeting Online Privacy, Congress Sets A New Tone With Big Tech
"Action on consumer law and privacy issues, as well as on competition law and policy, will all be vital in dealing with the problems associated with digital platforms' market power and the accumulation of consumers' data," Sims said earlier this year.

The Australian suit is the latest challenge regarding privacy that Google has faced from government entities. In September, the European Court of Justice ruled that Google must agree to European residents' requests to be "forgotten" online.

And in France, the data protection authority fined Google 50 million euros (about $55 million) in January, for "lack of transparency, inadequate information and lack of valid consent regarding the ads personalization."

ngapain beli bnib? ipin bukan oppo, huawei, samsuck, pixel dll yg secondnya gak guna dan lemot. second iphone msh terus ngacir dan dpt dukungan apple. iphone 5s aja dpt update smp ios 12 (skrg ios 13).

Kalo ini sih preferensi pribadi....tapi jadinya lu cuma beli android yang tahun kedua, ketiga ngelag, colong data pribadi, curi lokasi lu tinggal dan berkegiatan sehari-hari, uda pasti kena malware, spyware dll dan harga jual jatoh....

Alternative lain lu beli blackberry. Tapi blackberry yang masih keluaran RIM (bb sekarang lisensi ke perusahaan RRC). Kalo lu rajin masih ada yang jual BNIB...android versi bb uda di-patch sehingga aman jaya sentosa.
