Al-Shabaab Bersumpah Akan Lebih Banyak Darah Tertumpah

Five arrested over Kenya massacre, as al-Shabaab vows more bloodshed.

Three of those detained were coordinators held while trying to flee to Somalia, Interior Ministry spokesman Mwenda Njoka told dpa.

Two were arrested in the university area, he added. One of them was a Tanzanian named Rashid Charles Mberesero, who was hiding in a ceiling and had grenades.

The second was a university security guard, Osman Ali Dagane, who was believed to have helped the attackers, the spokesman said. The Kenyan of Somali origin was found to be in possession of jihadist materials, he added.

"An operation of that magnitude [the university attack] involves not just two, three or five people - it's much more complex," Njoka said.

In the deadliest attack yet by al-Shabaab, gunmen stormed the Moi University campus at dawn on Thursday, gunning down students who they identified as Christians because they could not answer questions about the Koran.

Security forces cornered the attackers in one dormitory where they were holding hostages. Four of the attackers finally blew themselves up, ending the 16-hour siege.

The attack claimed the lives of 142 students, three security officers and two university staff, while 104 people were injured, according to the Interior Ministry. Nineteen of the injured victims were reported to be in critical condition.

The government has said the assailants were likely associates of Mohamed Kuno Gamadheere, also known as Mohamed Dulyadayn, the suspected mastermind of the attack, for whom the security forces have offered a reward of 20 million shillings (210,000 dollars).

Kuno, a former teacher in an Islamic school in Garissa, is believed to have risen to the rank of commander within al-Shabaab.

Al-Shabaab attacks usually involve an entire network of operatives, including coordinators travelling between Kenya and Somalia and the killers themselves, Njoka said.

Thursday's killers knew they would not survive their mission, he added.

"We have been working through and through," Njoka said. "We are positive we are going to get more [suspects] based on our interrogations."

Al-Shabaab accused Christian-majority Kenya of persecuting Muslims and also pointed to its participation in an African Union force that is helping the Somali government battle the group.

It said the Kenyan public was condoning the government's policies and would therefore "pay the price with your blood."

"No amount of precaution and safety measures will be able to guarantee your safety, thwart another attack or prevent another bloodbath from occurring in your cities," the press release said.

Meanwhile in neighbouring Uganda, police said they were beefing up security at schools and universities in the centre of the country.

"According to the intelligence information we have, after attacking Kenya, al-Shabaab also plans to attack us. We are taking all the necessary measures to address the threats," police spokesman Patrick Onyango told dpa.

An al-Shabaab bombing in Kampala in 2010 killed more than 70 people watching the football World Cup.

In the Somali capital Mogadishu, security forces detained journalists at the independent radio station Shabelle for broadcasting a statement by an al-Shabaab spokesman claiming the Garissa attack, employees said.

The government has warned the media not to broadcast al-Shabaab propaganda. Shabelle has already been closed several times before in what government critics describe as attacks on press freedom.

The Garissa attack was the worst in Kenya since the 1998 bombing of the US embassy in Nairobi, which left more than 200 people dead.

Somalia's nearly decade-long battle against al-Shabaab has cost thousands of lives.

Al-Shabaab frequently targets Kenya over its participation in Somalia's military campaign against it. The siege of a Nairobi shopping mall that cost 67 lives in September 2013 has been followed by smaller attacks, mainly on the Kenyan coast.
